RSS is a tool for delivering ever changing web content. Many online publishers including news agencies and blogs and other on line publishers use RSS to syndicate their content as RSS feeds to whoever wants them. When RSS is used to distribute information it is called a feed. RSS resolves a problem for those who frequent the web. It allows them to easily download summaries of the latest news or information without visiting each website’s RSS feeds. They also maintain the user’s privacy since they don’t have to sign up for a site’s latest newsletter. The user gets the information through software called RSS Channel Readers. Channel Readers are also called news readers or News Aggregators. All you, the user, have to do is look for sites that syndicate content you are interested in and add them to the list that your news aggregator checks. These aggregators are available for a variety of computing platforms. Some are free applications and others are commercial applications.
There can be full feeds or partial feeds. A partial feed includes a headline, a short summary of the information in the feed and a link back to the website where the content resides. A full feed on the other hand is when the entire content of the article comes to the receiving website and there is no need to return to the original site of the content.
Feeds manage the flow of information and keep the recipient up to date. In the process of providing information RSS feeds perform some interesting tasks. For example, feeds provide the latest information on their topic without the recipient having to search the web. The recipient of the feed sets his or her preferences once and the information comes directly to their desktop and the subscription is anonymous. Also the recipient does no have to give out their web address. Feeds allow one to read the content on a reader not on line.
Email as we all know has become difficult to use. In boxes are rife with spam and filters are becoming more aggressive. It is estimated that delivery of e mail is sown to 34%. People are reluctant to give out their email addresses for fear of getting more junk mail.
RSS is a secure delivery method, and has a 100% delivery rate. Subscriptions are anonymous and there is no spam. If the reader tires of the content the RSS feed can be turned off. Hence, it is fully unsubscribed. Is this the next big communication link on the web?
